It's cold enough to wear mittens!

I had an old moth eaten cardigan that I felted with the purpose of recycling it into something different.  I saw a picture on pinterest about cutting mittens out of old felted sweaters and I just couldn't wait to try.

However, with most seemingly easy projects that I've encountered, there is a learning curve.  I carefully did the chalk outline of my left hand and then discovered that I couldn't outline my right hand.  Then cutting out around the thumb proved to be a problem for me and the bottom fabric was mangled in the process therefore making one mitten unusable.  So in essense, I effed up the whole project.

However, the sleeves of the cardigan came to the rescue and I made attempt number two.  This time there would be no red reindeers on the mittens but I could live with that.

Lessons learned in no particular order:

    1: Make a cardboard template.

    2: Use pins.

3: Button the cardigan before felting otherwise the buttonholes will become too small.

4: After cutting out the pieces, be sure to save the buttons.

  • Love it!  You do have some great project ideas!  Not cold enough for mittens in VA this weekend - it is in the 70's!  I love it!  I don't expect that to last, though.
